Here is where the story begins, with a king given everything

Long ago, there was a great king known as Zulqarnain. Allah had given him something very special. He had been given power, and the ability to travel anywhere in the world.

He could go east. He could go west. He could go anywhere he wanted. And Allah had given him the means to reach every single place.

But Zulqarnain was not a proud king. He was grateful. He used his power to do good.

Then came the first journey, toward the place where the sun sets

Zulqarnain began his travels. He followed a path that led him far, far to the west, toward the place where the sun seemed to set into a muddy spring.

There he found a people. Some of them were good. Some were not. Allah told him he had the choice, to be just with them or to be harsh.

Zulqarnain chose justice. He said: whoever does wrong will be corrected, and whoever does good will receive good in return.

And here is what happened next, on the journey toward the east

After that, Zulqarnain set off again. This time, he travelled far to the east, toward the place where the sun rises.

He found other people there. They lived in a land with almost no shelter from the sun. They had very little protection.

Zulqarnain saw them and moved on, knowing Allah knew everything about them and their situation.

Now the story moves to the third journey, between two mountains

Zulqarnain kept travelling. He came to a place between two great mountains. The people who lived there were very frightened.

They could barely speak his language. But they tried to communicate, pointing toward the horizon with worried faces.

Something was coming from beyond the mountains. Something that frightened them every single day.

Here is where the people told Zulqarnain about their greatest fear

The people explained: beyond the mountains lived two tribes called Yajuj and Majuj. These tribes caused great harm to everyone around them.

The people were so desperate that they offered Zulqarnain payment. They said: “We will pay you, just please build something to protect us.”

Zulqarnain shook his head. He did not want their money.

Then came the moment Zulqarnain showed what true power really looks like

Zulqarnain said: “What my Lord has given me is better than anything you could pay me.” He would not take their wealth.

Instead, he said: just help me with your strength and your work. Bring me large pieces of iron.

The people brought the iron. They worked together. And Zulqarnain directed the building of an enormous barrier.

And here is how the great barrier was built between the mountains

The workers filled the space between the two mountains with iron. Layer upon layer. Then Zulqarnain told them to blow on it with bellows, tools that make fire very hot.

The iron melted and fused together. Then molten copper was poured over it. The barrier became one solid, unbreakable wall.

Yajuj and Majuj could not get through it. They could not climb over it. They could not dig under it.

When the barrier was finished, the people cheered. They were safe. But Zulqarnain did not boast about what he had built.

He looked at the great wall and said quietly: “This is a mercy from my Lord.”

He said: one day, when the promise of Allah comes, He will bring this wall down. Everything on earth is temporary, only Allah is permanent.

And this is where the story of Zulqarnain reaches its lasting truth

Zulqarnain had travelled to three different parts of the world. He had been with every person he met. He had built a barrier that protected the weak from those who harmed them.

And through all of it, he never forgot who gave him his power. He never took the credit. He always pointed back to Allah.

وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَن ذِى ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ ۖ قُلْ سَأَتْلُوا۟ عَلَيْكُم مِّنْهُ ذِكْرًا
Wa-yasʾalūnaka ʿan Dhī l-Qarnayn, qul sa-atlū ʿalaykum minhu dhikrā
“And they ask you about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say: ‘I will recite to you something of his account.'” (Al-Kahf 18:83)

إِنَّا مَكَّنَّا لَهُۥ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ سَبَبًۭا
Innā makkannā lahū fī l-arḍi wa-ātaynāhu min kulli shayʾin sababā
“Indeed, We established him upon the earth, and We gave him to everything a way.” (Al-Kahf 18:84)

قَالَ هَـٰذَا رَحْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّى ۖ فَإِذَا جَآءَ وَعْدُ رَبِّى جَعَلَهُۥ دَكَّآءَ
Qāla hādhā raḥmatun min rabbī fa-idhā jāʾa waʿdu rabbī jaʿalahū dakkāʾ
“He said: ‘This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level. And the promise of my Lord is ever true.'” (Al-Kahf 18:98)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays.” (Sahih Muslim)
