Here is where the story begins, with a man of great wealth

Long ago, among the people of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him), there was a man named Qaroon. He was from their own community. He knew the same people. He grew up among them.

But Qaroon had something very different from the others. He had enormous wealth. His treasures were so great that just the keys to his storerooms were too heavy for ordinary people to lift.

He was one of the richest people who ever lived.

Then came the moment Qaroon forgot something very important

Qaroon had been given all that wealth by Allah. But Qaroon stopped thinking of it that way. He began to believe that he had earned it all himself.

He said: “This wealth came to me because of MY knowledge. Because of MY cleverness. I deserved it.”

He forgot that everything comes from Allah, every coin, every treasure, every breath.

And here is how Qaroon walked through the streets, full of pride

One day, Qaroon came out to his people dressed in the most dazzling clothes. He walked slowly. He wanted everyone to see him.

Some people looked at him and wished they could have what he had. “How wonderful!” they said. “He has everything.”

But the wise people in the crowd shook their heads.

Now the story moves to the advice Qaroon chose to ignore

The wise people called out to Qaroon. They said: “Do not exult in your wealth. Allah does not love those who boast.”

They reminded him: “Seek with what Allah has given you the home of the Hereafter, but do not forget your share of this world. Be kind. Be generous. Do not spread wrongdoing.”

Qaroon heard every word. He walked away without listening.

Here is when the people who admired him began to reconsider

The people who had wished for Qaroon’s life started to think again. They saw how arrogant he was. They saw how he treated others.

The wise believers said: “Allah’s reward for those who believe and do good is better than anything Qaroon has. And only the patient will receive it.”

Some hearts began to change.

Then came the moment that shook the entire earth

Then Allah’s command came. The ground beneath Qaroon’s feet began to move. The earth opened up, gently, with complete power, and swallowed Qaroon and his home entirely.

Gone. Everything gone. All the gold. All the keys. All the fine clothes. All the pride.

No one could help him. No wealth, no treasure, and no cleverness could stop what Allah had decided.

And this is what the people said when they saw what happened

The people who had envied Qaroon now stood in silence. They looked at where his home had been. It was as if he had never existed.

They said to each other: “Allah gives provision to whoever He wills and restricts it from whoever He wills. If Allah had not been merciful to us, He could have caused the earth to swallow us too.”

They were grateful. They were humble. And they understood.

Where This Story of Qaroon in the Quran

The Qarun story in the Quran is told primarily in Surah Al-Qasas (Chapter 28, verses 76–82). Qarun is also briefly mentioned in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:39) and Surah Ghafir (40:24).

إِنَّ قَـٰرُونَ كَانَ مِن قَوْمِ مُوسَىٰ فَبَغَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ
Inna Qārūna kāna min qawmi Mūsā fa-baghā ʿalayhim
“Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized over them.” (Al-Qasas 28:76)

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ مِنَ ٱلْكُنُوزِ مَآ إِنَّ مَفَاتِحَهُۥ لَتَنُوٓأُ بِٱلْعُصْبَةِ أُو۟لِى ٱلْقُوَّةِ
Wa-ātaynāhu mina l-kunūzi mā inna mafātīḥahu la-tanūʾu bil-ʿuṣbati ūlī l-quwwah
“And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men.” (Al-Qasas 28:76)

قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُۥ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عِندِىٓ
Qāla innamā ūtītuhū ʿalā ʿilmin ʿindī
“He said: ‘I was only given it because of knowledge I have.'” (Al-Qasas 28:78)

فَخَسَفْنَا بِهِۦ وَبِدَارِهِ ٱلْأَرْضَ فَمَا كَانَ لَهُۥ مِن فِئَةٍۢ يَنصُرُونَهُۥ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ
Fa-khasafnā bihī wa-bidārihī l-arḍa fa-mā kāna lahū min fiʾatin yanṣurūnahū min dūni Llāh
“So We caused the earth to swallow him and his home. And there was for him no company to help him other than Allah.” (Al-Qasas 28:81)

The Prophet ﷺ warned us about the danger of loving wealth excessively: “By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you, but I fear that worldly wealth will be given to you as it was given to those before you, and you will compete for it as they competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them.” (Sahih Muslim)
