Here is where the story of Maryam in the Quran begins, with a very special family

Long ago, there was a woman who made a promise to Allah. Her name was Hannah. She was pregnant, and she said: “O Allah, I give this baby to You.”

Hannah hoped for a son. But when the baby was born, it was a girl. She named her Maryam.

Hannah said, “O Allah, I have named her Maryam, and I place her in Your care.”

And then came the moment Maryam found her special guardian

Maryam’s father had passed away. The people around her were good Muslims, and they all wanted to take care of her. They drew lots, like picking names from a hat, to see who would look after her.

The lot fell to a righteous man named Zakariyya (peace be upon him). He was a prophet of Allah. He was so happy to take care of Maryam.

He built her a special room in the masjid where she could pray and learn.

Here is the amazing thing that happened inside her prayer room

Every time Zakariyya visited Maryam, he found food beside her, even though no one had brought it. “O Maryam, where does this food come from?” he asked.

Maryam smiled and said: “It is from Allah. Allah gives to whoever He wills without measure.” (Al-Imran 3:37)

This was a miracle. Maryam was so close to Allah that He provided for her in ways nobody expected.

Then came the scene that changed everything, when the angel appeared

One day, Maryam went to a quiet place, away from everyone. She wanted to be alone to pray.

Suddenly, a figure appeared before her. It was the angel Jibreel (Gabriel), peace be upon him, but he looked like a man.

Maryam was frightened. She said: “I seek the protection of Allah from you!”

And here is what the angel said, bringing the greatest news

Jibreel said: “Do not be afraid. I am a messenger from your Lord. I have come to give you a pure son.”

Maryam was shocked. She said: “How can I have a son? No man has ever touched me, and I am not a bad woman.”

Jibreel said: “Your Lord says: This is easy for Me. And We will make him a sign for all people and a mercy from Us.” (Maryam 19:21)

And so, by the command of Allah alone, Maryam became pregnant with a baby boy.

Now the story moves to where Maryam found herself all alone

The time came for the baby to be born. Maryam went far away, to a quiet place near a palm tree. She was alone and in great pain.

She felt so sad. She said: “I wish I had died before this and been completely forgotten.”

But then a voice came to her, perhaps Jibreel, perhaps her newborn baby, saying: “Do not grieve. Your Lord has placed a stream beneath you.” (Maryam 19:24)

And then came the moment of a beautiful miracle under the palm tree

The voice told her: “Shake the trunk of the palm tree. Fresh dates will fall for you.”

Maryam looked up. She reached for the tree. And ripe, sweet dates came falling.

She ate. She drank from the stream. Allah was taking care of her.

Here is what happened next, when Maryam carried her baby home

The voice told Maryam: “If anyone speaks to you today, say: ‘I have made a vow of silence to Allah. I will not speak to anyone today.'”

So Maryam wrapped her baby in her arms and walked back to her people. When they saw her with a baby, they were very upset. “O Maryam! You have done something terrible!” they said.

Maryam said nothing. She just pointed to the baby.

And this is the miracle that silenced everyone: the baby who spoke

The people were confused. “How can we talk to a baby?” they said.

And then the baby spoke. The tiny newborn, Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him, opened his mouth and said clearly:

“Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am.” (Maryam 19:30–31)

The people were amazed. No one could deny what they had heard.
