Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him) was an old man with white hair and weak bones, and he still asked Allah for a child. Not because he thought it was easy. Because he knew who Allah was.

Here is where the story begins, with an old man who never stopped praying

Long ago, there was a prophet named Zakariya (peace be upon him). He was very old. His bones had become weak. His hair had turned completely white.

But Zakariya still prayed every single day. He still served Allah with all his heart. He never, ever gave up on Allah.

Then came the moment Zakariya whispered his deepest wish to Allah

One day, Zakariya went somewhere quiet. He wanted to speak to Allah, just the two of them. He called out in a very soft, private voice.

He said: “My Lord, my bones are weak and my head is full of white hair. But I have never been unhappy when I called on You.”

He took a deep breath. And then he asked for the thing he had always wanted.

And here is the prayer Zakariya made with his whole heart

“My Lord,” Zakariya said gently, “I am afraid that when I am gone, no one will carry on this good work. And my wife has not been able to have children.”

“So please, give me, from Your own generosity, an heir. Someone who will carry on the work of the prophets.”

It was a soft, humble, honest prayer. And Allah heard every word.

Now the story moves to the angels bringing the most joyful news

While Zakariya was standing in the masjid and praying, something wonderful happened. The angels called out to him.

They said: “O Zakariya! We bring you the good news of a boy. His name will be Yahya. No one has ever been given this name before.”

Zakariya’s heart leapt. He could hardly believe it.

Here is where Zakariya asked Allah for a sign to hold on to

Zakariya was so amazed. He asked: “My Lord, how can I have a son? My wife cannot have children, and I am very, very old.”

Allah answered him: ” This is not difficult for Me. I created you before, when you were nothing.

Then Zakariya asked: “Give me a sign.” Allah told him: ” Your sign will be that you will not be able to speak to people for three days, except through gestures.

Then came the three days that Zakariya spent in silence and gratitude

For three whole days, Zakariya could not speak. He could only use gestures to communicate with the people around him.

But inside, his heart was full. Full of gratitude. Full of wonder. Full of love for Allah.

He came out to his people from the prayer room. He gestured to them: praise Allah in the morning, and praise Him in the evening.

Everything happened exactly as Allah had said. Zakariya and his wife were blessed with a son. A beautiful, righteous boy.

They named him Yahya, just as Allah had chosen. Prophet Zakariya’s son Yahya grew up to be a prophet himself, wise and kind and beloved by Allah.

Allah had answered the whisper of an old man who never stopped believing. And He had answered it with a miracle that would bless the whole world.

Where is the Story of Zakariya in the Quran?

The Zakariya story in the Quran appears in two main surahs. The most complete account is in Surah Maryam (19:2–11) and Surah Al-Anbiya (21:89–90). He is also mentioned in Surah Al-Imran (3:37–41).

إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ نِدَآءً خَفِيًّۭا ۝ قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى وَهَنَ ٱلْعَظْمُ مِنِّى وَٱشْتَعَلَ ٱلرَّأْسُ شَيْبًۭا وَلَمْ أَكُن بِدُعَآئِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيًّۭا
Idh nādā rabbahū nidāʾan khafiyyā. Qāla rabbi innī wahana l-ʿaẓmu minnī wa-shtaʿala r-raʾsu shayban wa-lam akun bi-duʿāʾika rabbi shaqiyyā
“When he called to his Lord a private call. He said: ‘My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy.'” (Maryam 19:3–4)

وَإِنِّى خِفْتُ ٱلْمَوَٰلِىَ مِن وَرَآءِى وَكَانَتِ ٱمْرَأَتِى عَاقِرًۭا فَهَبْ لِى مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّۭا
Wa-innī khiftu l-mawāliya min warāʾī wa-kānati mraʾatī ʿāqiran fa-hab lī min ladunka waliyyā
“And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir.” (Maryam 19:5)

يَـٰزَكَرِيَّآ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ ٱسْمُهُۥ يَحْيَىٰ لَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ سَمِيًّۭا
Yā-Zakariyyā innā nubashshiruka bi-ghulāmin ismuhu Yaḥyā lam najʿal lahū min qablu samiyyā
“O Zakariya, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be Yahya. We have not assigned to any before him this name.” (Maryam 19:7)

وَزَكَرِيَّآ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِى فَرْدًۭا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ
Wa-Zakariyyā idh nādā rabbahū rabbi lā tadharni fardan wa-anta khayru l-wārithīn
“And remember Zakariya, when he called to his Lord: ‘My Lord, do not leave me alone, and You are the best of inheritors.'” (Al-Anbiya 21:89)
