So Luqman began to speak. And every word he said was full of love.

And here is the very first and most important lesson Luqman gave

Luqman looked into his son’s eyes. He said gently: “My dear son, never, ever worship anyone besides Allah.”

He explained that worshipping anyone other than Allah is the biggest wrong a person can do. Allah alone created us. Allah alone deserves our love and obedience.

His son listened carefully. He understood.

Now the story moves to a lesson about being good to parents

Luqman told his son, “Always be kind to your mother and father. Your mother carried you before you were born. She worked so hard for you.”

He said: Follow your parents in what is good. Listen to them. Respect them. But remember, if anyone ever asks you to disobey Allah, you do not follow that, even from a parent.

That balance was important. Love your parents AND love Allah above all.

Here is when Luqman taught his son that Allah sees everything

Luqman told his son something that stayed with him forever. “My dear son,” he said, “even if you did something the size of a tiny mustard seed, hidden inside a rock, or deep in the earth, or high in the sky, Allah would bring it forth.“

Nothing is hidden from Allah. Not a single thought. Not a single action.

So always try to do good, even when no one is watching.

Then came the lesson about prayer that shapes every single day

“My son,” said Luqman, “establish your prayer.” He meant: pray regularly, every day, without missing it.

And here is the lesson about doing good and being patient

Luqman told his son, “Tell people to do what is right. Speak up against what is wrong.” Even a child can do this, by being kind, by being honest, by helping others.

“And when hard things happen to you,” Luqman said, “be patient.” Not every day is easy. But patience is one of the greatest strengths a person can have.

Luqman said that with Allah’s help, we can be patient through anything.

Luqman gave his son two more pieces of advice. First: do not walk around proudly, as if you are better than everyone else. Allah does not love those who are arrogant.

“Even the harshest of all sounds,” said Luqman, “is the braying of a donkey.” He was teaching his son that loud and proud is never beautiful.

Wa-laqad ātaynā Luqmāna l-ḥikmata ani shkur lillāh
“And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom, saying: Be grateful to Allah.” (Luqman 31:12)

يَـٰبُنَىَّ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّ ٱلشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ
Yā-bunayya lā tushrik billāhi inna sh-shirka laẓulmun ʿaẓīm
“O my son, do not associate anything with Allah. Indeed, associating others with Him is a great wrong.” (Luqman 31:13)

يَـٰبُنَىَّ أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأْمُرْ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَٱنْهَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَآ أَصَابَكَ
Yā-bunayya aqimi ṣ-ṣalāta wa-mur bil-maʿrūfi wa-nha ʿani l-munkari waṣbir ʿalā mā aṣābak
“O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you.” (Luqman 31:17)
